How To Change a Furnace Filter
Regularly changing out your furnace filter can help your system run smoothly each winter. Here, we’re going to show you how to change your furnace filter properly. This can be accomplished in four easy steps.
1. Turn Off Your Furnace and Locate Your Filter
First, you want to turn the thermostat off on your furnace. In fact, if you’d like to be really safe, disconnect the power to your furnace as well.
In addition, you’re going to want to figure out where your furnace filter is. One way you can do this is to look at the instruction manual for your furnace. If that doesn’t help you, remove the cover of your furnace that is located on the front or the side. You remove the cover simply by pulling “up.”
After removing the cover, look for the blower compartment, and you will be able to locate the filter easily.

2. Get the Correct Furnace Filter Details
The next thing you’ll want to check is if your furnace filter actually needs to be changed at all. If it has a plastic frame, you may be surprised to learn that you don’t need to change the filter at all. Just rinse your furnace filter off in your tub or in your sink.
You’ll want to confirm the correct size of your filter next. Look on your old filter, and the size should be listed there. If it’s not, just measure your old filter with a tape measure to get the correct size.
3. Remove and Discard Your Old Furnace Filter
At this point, you can remove and discard your old furnace filter. Before you discard it, look at it and find the direction that the airflow arrows point. When you install the new furnace filter, it’s very important that the airflow arrows are facing toward the furnace.
4. Install the New Filter and Turn Your Furnace On
Finally, simply install your new furnace filter and turn your furnace on. Your job is done.
