If you would like to enjoy more energy savings and control of your home’s thermostat, you should consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. These devices are accessible via smart device anywhere you have internet connectivity. While you may be a little wary about installing your own thermostat, the process is fairly simple when you implement the quick tips that we’ll go over below.

Turn Off the Circuit Breakers

The first step in your smart thermostat installation process is to turn off the power to your HVAC system. You can do this directly at your electrical panel box. Simply look for the breaker or breakers that are labeled “HVAC” and flip them to the off position. One of the most significant concerns that homeowners have about DIY thermostat replacement is dealing with the wiring. All thermostat wiring is very low voltage and won’t cause any physical harm. However, it’s still recommended that you kill the power to your HVAC system so that you don’t cause any damage if any of the wires touch one another during the installation process.

Remove the Old Thermostat

You want to start the removal process by popping off the faceplate of your existing thermostat. Most of the faceplates are held on via compression. However, there are some faceplates that have a hidden screw underneath that will need to be removed.

Once the faceplate is off, you’ll want to note where all the wires are connected so that you can rewire them in the correct order for your new thermostat. Go ahead and remove the wires that are on your backplate and unscrew the backplate from the wall.

Install Your Smart Thermostat

Next, screw the backplate for your new smart thermostat into the wall. Make sure the screws go into a stud, or use screw anchors so that the thermostat is secured to the wall. Now, hook up all the wiring according to how it was hooked up with your prior thermostat. Lastly, you want to put your faceplate back on and flip the breaker for your HVAC system back to the on position.
