AC Vacation Settings in Belleville, ON

When you are planning a vacation, your air conditioner is probably the last thing on your mind. However, the right thermostat setting can make a big difference when it comes to your finances. By not paying to cool your empty house, you can save energy and money. To find the perfect temperature for your needs, follow these tips.

Should You Turn Your AC Off?

Turning your AC off altogether does provide the lowest monthly energy bill possible, but it is a bad idea. If your AC does not run at all for days or weeks, it can damage your house. Excess temperatures can cause wood furnishings and home structures to warp. Furthermore, without the AC running, nothing removes humidity. This can cause mold and result in a musty smell that greets you when you return from your trip.

Which Setting Saves You the Most Money?

To save on energy bills without having to pay for home repairs later on, you need the right setting. Typically, a setting of 31 to 32 Celsius is a good idea. Your AC will barely run, but it will kick on just long enough to reduce humidity and keep extreme temperatures from damaging your house.

A Word of Caution

Keep in mind that these temperatures are only appropriate if you are not leaving anything living behind in your home. If you plan on leaving your cat at home with a pet sitter who comes to feed it, you will need a little more AC. Likewise, extra AC is needed to avoid killing houseplants. Avoid setting your AC higher than 27 Celsius if you want to keep your pets and plants safe.
